Etihad Rail was established in June 2009 under Federal Law no. 2, with a mandate to manage the development, construction and operation of the UAE’s national freight and passenger railway network.
The railway network will be built in phases to link the principal centres of population and industry of the UAE, as well as to form a vital part of the planned GCC railway network linking the six countries of the GCC: The Kingdom of Bahrain, The State of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and UAE.

About Etihad Rail DB
Etihad Rail DB Operations LLC, the operating partner of Etihad Rail, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Etihad Rail network. The establishment of Etihad Rail DB is in line with Etihad Rail’s intent – to introduce a UAE-based company that will enable knowledge transfer from international, experienced railway professionals, from DB and elsewhere, to a UAE National workforce, paving the way for Emiratis to be the leading railway professionals of the UAE.
The company will operate the UAE’s national railway network, which is a key pillar of UAE Vision 2021 and Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, and in line with plans to diversify the economy and promote social development through a world-class transport infrastructure.
Stage One, a 264-kilometre route, will facilitate the transport of granulated sulphur from Shah and Habshan to Ruwais in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.
The first stage is operated by Etihad Rail DB and will eventually be one element of a network that spans the six states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
